Attract Hummingbirds to Your Yard – And to Your Hummingbird Ring!
The Hummingbird Ring is a fantastic feeder that offers an up-close and personal experience with hummingbirds. However, if the birds don't recognize your yard as hummingbird-friendly, they won't visit your ring. Fortunately, it can be easy to attract hummingbirds to your yard and help them find your Hummingbird Ring.
What Hummingbirds Need Hummingbirds are interested in four key elements in any yard they visit: food, water, shelter, and nesting sites. By providing all four in abundance, you'll soon have plenty of hummingbirds flocking to your yard and your Hummingbird Ring.
Food Nectar-rich flowers are a crucial food source for hummingbirds, and those with tubular shapes are best suited for their needle-like bills. Planting flowers like bee balm, salvia, petunias, columbine, and trumpet vine near your deck, patio, or other seating areas will help hummingbirds get accustomed to feeding in that vicinity. You can even tuck a Hummingbird Ring (or multiple rings) into a flower pot on a patio table or hang pots from a gazebo or arbor to get the hummers used to visiting the feeder before it's on your finger. Additional nectar feeders can also be hung nearby to attract hungry hummingbirds.
Water While hummingbirds obtain plenty of liquid from the nectar they drink, they still visit water sources for bathing and preening. These tiny birds prefer shallow bubblers, such as bubbling fountains, where they can splash about. Misters are also an excellent option, as hummingbirds will fly right through the mist before perching to preen. The moving water and sparkling effects help attract hummingbirds to the area. Positioning water sources near the feeding area will help catch the birds' attention and encourage them to stay close to your Hummingbird Ring.
Shelter Between sips from your Hummingbird Ring, visits to the water, and feeding on nectar-rich flowers, hummingbirds need places to perch and rest. Shrubs, vines, and trees provide excellent perches, and hummingbirds will choose ones that give them a commanding view of the surrounding area to watch for predators or competing visitors. Clotheslines, trellises, and arbors can also serve as convenient perches, or you can add quaint hummingbird-sized swings to your yard. Placing different perches near prime feeding areas will encourage the birds to stay nearby.
Nesting Sites The same trees and shrubs that provide shelter also make ideal nesting sites for hummingbirds. Thorny shrubs are particularly favored, as they offer an extra layer of protection from predators. Planting nest-friendly plants in a quiet corner of the yard, away from the feeding and water areas, will help the birds feel more at ease. Providing nesting materials like cotton fibers, spider webs, moss, and lichen will further encourage hummingbirds to take up residence.
By meeting hummingbirds' basic needs in comprehensive ways, you can easily bring these flying jewels right to your yard. As they learn just how safe and convenient your yard is, they will be more willing to visit your Hummingbird Ring and give you the amazing experience of hand-feeding a hummingbird.
HAND FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS To hand-feed hummingbirds using the Hummingbird Ring: 1. Remove petals and fill with fresh nectar (store-bought or homemade). Red dye is not necessary and should not be used. 2. Place the Hummingbird Ring in a visible location, such as in a small glass, shot glass, or flower pot filled with sand or dirt. You can also use one of our Hummingbird Trainers. 3. Position the Hummingbird Ring near other nectar feeders or hummingbird-friendly flowers. 4. Keep the nectar fresh and the Hummingbird Ring clean and full. Change the nectar in all feeders every 3-5 days to maintain a healthy hummingbird population. 5. As the hummingbirds start feeding from the Hummingbird Ring, continue to keep it clean and full. The more they use it, the more comfortable they will become. 6. Once the hummingbirds are used to the Hummingbird Ring, you can start to introduce yourself. Sit in the vicinity while they feed, so they get accustomed to your presence. 7. When the hummingbirds are comfortable with you and the Hummingbird Ring, you can begin hand-feeding them. Place the ring on your finger and sit patiently, allowing the hummingbirds to approach and feed.
Enjoy this amazing up-close experience with these beautiful creatures!
